Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar (for cheesecake swirl)
  • 1 large egg (for cheesecake swirl)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for cheesecake swirl)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for frosting)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • German chocolate for decoration (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix the flour, 1 cup sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to the dry mixture and beat for 2 minutes until smooth.
  4. Stir in the boiling water until combined, making the batter fluffy.
  5. Prepare the cake pans and divide the batter evenly between them.
  6. Make the cheesecake swirl by beating cream cheese with 1/2 cup sugar until smooth; add 1 egg and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  7. Swirl the cheesecake mixture over the chocolate batter and create a marbled effect with a knife.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
  9. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  10. Prepare the frosting by whipping heavy cream to stiff peaks, then adding powdered sugar and vanilla.
  11. Frost the cake layers once they are cool.
  12. Decorate with pieces of German chocolate if desired.
  13. Serve chilled for the best flavor.

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients for easier mixing. Measure flour accurately to avoid dense cake.
